THE BUILDING

AT WAR

THE CLOSE

IN THE INNY

Foundation

Tiffen records that the school was founded in 1825, as shown on the large black two-faced display board outside the school on Mount Street, originally as the The Liverpool Mechanics' School of Arts, altered in 1832 ready for the 1833 year into the The Liverpool Mechanics' Institution and again subsequently changed to The Liverpool Institute.

The Signboard is visible in the painting shown at the top of this page ... and reads Liverpool Institute High School for Boys Founded 1825.

You can see Mrs. G's Tuckshop too if you look carefully !

The building in Mount Street was erected by public subscription for 16,000 pounds, the Corporation donating the land on which it stands today. Lord Brougham laid the founding stone on the 20th July in 1835. The construction was finally completed on 30th March in 1837, although it was largely refurbished later after fire destroyed its innards.
