In February and March of the Year 2001, several celebrations ("The ListBot Riots") were held in Liverpool and some seedy parts of Wales.  The original reason is unclear, but it was perhaps precipitated by the Members of this Liobians' Lobby, who decided that they might get together at a time which coincided with the Annual Liobians'  Dinner, always held on the evening of the first Friday in March.

Another compelling and coincidental rationale used by the lads to convince their spouses and others of their sanity, was the concurrent Final of the League Cup, to be held in Cardiff between Liverpool and Birmingham City.

A.    Liobians Visit Wales

So it was that several of the Listbot community met in Cardiff in various public houses before the game, on Sunday 24th February.  One such venue was the Heath pub, where Fred Bilson convened an informal gathering and met up with Ken Webster, Stan Kelly and John Snelson.

B.    ListBotties Riots at Ye Cracke

Later, on Wednesday 28th February, the following lads met in Ye Cracke, where huge amounts of beer were drunk between 7-00pm and 11-00pm ....

B1    Iain Taylor's nose, Paul Gilbert having a day out, Stan Kelly-Bootle, Bill Leece, David Pierce .... 'nother pint of Guinness, Dave   ?

B2    Graham Ross, Eddie Abenson, some sad, pelatic Liobian defying gravity and either falling into oblivion on his feet, or bored off  his tits by Eddie and Graham's rivetting repartee   ...         who is that poor bastard   ?     Was he one of us, or just a passing punter who popped in for a few bevvies   ?

B3    Alan Todd, John Snelson, Bill Carroll (get in der Billy), Colin Hunt, Ken Webster with a very nice watch and haircut

B4    Iain Taylor, Paul Gilbert, Stan Kelly-Bootle, Gordon Mills - er ... um ... collar and tie getting a bit out of order here Gordon ... David Pierce (ahhh, not another pint of Guinness here) ... hang about, who IS that guy propping up the wall   ?

Here's another clutch of photographs kindly submitted by Wally Owen  :-

I should point out that there were some other ring-ins who turned up as "guests", some invited by Liobians.

Gabriel Muies, a local, controversial but dogged campaigner of Lpool 8 was there too. Gabriel is parent of a 1970s LI pupil. He has had the conviction that the dissolution of the school was accompanied by an illegal disappearance of school assets. Legally and technically any remaining school assets were / are the property of the Liverpool Institute Foundation which was established under the terms of the transfer of the school to the Corporation in 1905.

At the school's dissolution the Foundation continued in existence but was, perhaps split into two parts, one entrusted to LIPA as long as it continues to operate in the Mount St. building; the other under the custodianship of the Corporation and its Dept. of Lifelong Learning (successor to the Education Dept.

Gabriel Muies is altruistically mounting almost single-handedly, his own, private campaign trying to have the said funds "repatriated" elsewhere ... see Liobian Funds Scandal.

C2    Main Entrance, the Pair of Iron Gates and Doors to the Hall - now the Paul McCartney Auditorium ... note that the School Motto whilst correct, has been moved from its original position; that is the original clock too.

C3    The plaque over Alan Durband's Room

C4    In the LIPA Bar .... used to be the Institute Canteen .... Gordon Mills, David Pierce, Iain Taylor .... Gordon, on his sixth pint, just can't believe how good this one looks ... just look at that colour, finish and head .... wonderful ..... and he only lives around the corner, so imagine how the rest of us are thinking - and it's only half past eight .... yazoooooooooo !

C5    John Snelson, Dave "Catweasel" Pierce (Felix is dreaming about those pints of Guinness) and Geoff Southern, using his height - looking patronisingly like he is not with the other two, and has come for an interview ...  trying to find a cab at LIPA

C6    John Snelson, James Snelson, a rather red-eyed Phil Oldfield who has just flown in, Paul Spenley and Stan Kelly-Bootle having a puff in the LIPA Bar ... just getting a few bevvies in before going off the to Liobians' Dinner at Anfield

Paul Spenley records ...

"We were welcomed and then guided around by Liobian and LIPA Council Member Roger Morris OBE.(yes - other buggers efforts).

Roger also attended the Dinner at Anfield in the company of another LIPA Council Member and Liobian, Stuart Christie.

Both have offered their assistance in mounting the 175th Anniversary gathering of the founding of the Institute planned for the end of August 2001 of which more later when plans are further advanced.

Generally speaking, I think that LIPA is an excellent facility, which has taken the original architecture and improved and modified it for a new purpose. The new presentation is tasteful, and the facilities impressive. I was thrilled to see how the character of the Institue has been retained in the main hall and staircases and the classic entrance. Elsewhere, the rooms have been changed in their capital equipment, lighting, use, design and content, yet the size and "§" symbol of the rooms remains almost as it was, all those years ago. I guess it remains to be seen whether the quality of teaching and learning can yield the matriculated, valued graduates, but the quality of the facilities is in my opinion, just excellent.

Other ListBot Members joined us for the Dinner at Anfield on the night of Friday 2nd March, when further rioting took place and many atrocities were committed.  Paul Gilbert has written up some interesting notes on his experience, which you can find in "Paul's Big Day Out".

Some photographs of these events appear below as thumbnails that can be enlarged by clicking on the pictures.  You will note that the participants are at various stages of undress, dishevelment and apparently, inebriation. Er ... um ... those words ring a bell ...

D1Anfield.jpg (37050 bytes)D2stantodd.jpg (87241 bytes)D3LIOB6.jpg (30701 bytes)

D1    Fred Dugdale and Paul Nickson .... diggin' the trophies, and wondrin' which one to nick ... ouch !

D2    Stan Kelly and Alan Todd competing for the Sartorial Elegance Award ... how old is that tie, Toddy .. and Stan - I dunno, words fail me.

D3    Colin Hunt, John Snelson, Ken Webster, Alan Todd and Bill Carroll ... who's got the oldest tie then   ?

E    Conclusion

So, it was quite a week .. from Sunday in Wales for the Liverpool vs Birmingham City League Cup Final, the ListBotties booze-up in Ye Cracke on Wednesday, then the tour of LIPA and then following that, the Liobians' Annual Dinner.  Thanks.
